| Part 3: Refugee Law |

This course explains the parts of the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees that are relevant to asylum claims in the United Kingdom, including the definition of a refugee, issues relating to credibility, future risk, country information, persecution, Convention reasons, protection, cessation clauses and exclusion clauses. The course also includes extensive reference to the EC Qualification Directive defining refugee status and includes material on the problems that arise in making out claims for refugee status and on potential strategies for addressing those problems.

Focusing on the practical side of asylum work, this course looks at the process and procedure in the United Kingdom for claiming asylum and associated welfare issues that arise out of that process. | Part 5: Human Rights Law |

Moving on to look specifically at human rights law and protection, this course explains how human rights law affects claims (and claimants) for international protection in the United Kingdom. The course covers the legal operation of human rights in immigration and asylum proceedings, and examines Articles 3 and 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights in depth, as well as touching on the other ECHR rights. There is a detailed discussion of proportionality as it applies in human rights cases, including the relevant case law. Finally, the course examines human rights protection and immigration status and travel documents.

European Community free movement law increasingly important for immigration practice and this course looks at the free movement rights of both EEA and non-EEA nationals.
