The Government’s radical new Australian style points-based immigration system has already started. It represents an opportunity for employers to recruit and sponsor skilled workers from abroad. The system also represents a threat, as employers will be held accountable if their foreign workers breach the new rules.

The expert speakers at this morning conference will guide you through the details of the new scheme, including what workers can be recruited, how to challenge decisions you don’t like, the duties and responsibilities of employers and what happens if an employee breaks the rules once inside the UK.

9.00am Registration and breakfast
9.15am Welcome and overview of scheme
9.30am Tier 1: highly skilled workers. Criteria, practicalities, how to make an application.
10.00am Tier 2: skilled workers. Implementation dates and what is known about plans for this tier.
10.30am Tea/coffee break
10.50am Employers duties and responsibilities. What does the scheme mean for employers and what happens where an employee breaks the rules?
11.20am What does all this mean for small businesses?
11.50am Review of decisions. The Home Office say visa officers will carefully review decisions on request. What will this involve and how can you best get the outcome you want?
12.10am Tea/coffee break
12.30am Challenging decisions in the courts. The last resort: calling in the lawyers where a vital application has been refused.
12.50am Round Up
1.00pm Finish

Speakers include:

Laurie Fransman QC. Chairing the event, Laurie was a co-founder of the Immigration Law Practitioners Association and is universally recognised as a leader in the field.

Frances Elliott, Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Frances offers some insider information on the scheme.

Andrew Cave, Head of Policy at the Federation of Small Businesses will discuss the implications for employers.

Julie-sue Fransman, Partner at Fransmans. A straight-talking, no nonsense commercial immigration specialist, you would not want to refuse one of Julie-sue’s applications.

Elena Tsirlina also at Fransmans, will talk through the obligations the Home Office is imposing on employers.

Ian Macdonald QC. Co-founder of Garden Court Chambers, author of the main book on immigration law and perhaps the leading immigration silk.
